PIM integration

Turn ERP product lists into Shopify-ready product pages.

Pocketknife can pull the original product list from your ERP, match each item by SKU or another unique identifier, enrich the product from your PIM and push the finished title, description, imagery, files and attributes into Shopify.

Why PIM matters

Your ERP is rarely where the product page lives.

ERPs are good at item codes, pricing, availability and accounting fields. A PIM is usually where the product story, imagery and technical content belong. Shopify needs both.

ERP

Use the product list you already trust.

Pocketknife can start with ERP product and variant records, then use a code you already have, like a SKU, to keep every downstream update matched.

  • SKU or item code.
  • Variant, barcode and unit fields.
  • Pricing and availability context.
PIM

Add the content Shopify actually needs.

The PIM can supply the richer product content that does not belong in the ERP.

  • Titles, descriptions and product copy.
  • Images, files and spec sheets.
  • Sizes, attributes, dimensions and documents.
Shopify

Publish the finished product page.

Pocketknife can build and sync the Shopify product payload once the ERP and PIM data have been joined.

  • Products and variants.
  • Images and metafields.
  • Collections and publish state.
How updates move

Change product content in the PIM, then let Shopify catch up.

When the PIM is the place your team maintains images, product copy and technical files, Shopify should not rely on manual edits or one-off imports.

1. Match

Find the product from the ERP feed.

Pocketknife uses a code you already have, like a SKU, stock code or supplier code, to match the ERP item to the product record in the PIM.

2. Enrich

Pull the content Shopify is missing.

Product titles, long descriptions, image URLs, variant imagery, size guides, PDF spec sheets and custom attributes can be added before Shopify is updated.

3. Build

Prepare the Shopify product payload.

Pocketknife builds products, variants, images, metafields and collection assignments using the combined ERP and PIM data.

4. Publish

Push the updated product into Shopify.

Shopify receives the product update without your team re-entering the same copy, files and image changes in the admin.

Who supplies what

Keep the ERP for item data and the PIM for product content.

The goal is not to make the ERP pretend to be a product content tool. It is to use the right source for each part of the Shopify product page.

PIM integration FAQ

What to know before connecting Shopify to your PIM.

Answers for Shopify Plus teams connecting PIM, ERP and product content workflows across systems like Pronto Xi, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Apparel21, ASW, Exact, Oracle E-Business Suite, Akeneo, Salsify and Plytix.

Can Pocketknife connect ERP products to a PIM before Shopify is updated?

Yes. Pocketknife can start with the ERP product list, match each product by SKU or another unique identifier, then enrich the Shopify update with PIM content.

Why not store all product information in the ERP?

Most ERPs are not built for ecommerce content. They usually hold item, pricing and stock data, while product descriptions, imagery, spec sheets and attributes often belong in a PIM.

Can PIM images be pushed into Shopify?

Yes. Image URLs or managed product media can be included in the Shopify product payload so updated PIM imagery can flow through to Shopify.

Can spec sheets and technical files be synced?

Yes. Spec sheets, manuals, safety files and other product documents can be pushed as links, metafields or file references depending on how the Shopify theme uses them.

Can product titles and descriptions come from the PIM?

Yes. Titles, descriptions, product copy and other customer-facing content can come from the PIM instead of relying on short ERP item descriptions.

Can updates in the PIM automatically update Shopify?

Yes. Once the PIM is connected into the product sync flow, changes to images, descriptions, attributes or files can trigger Shopify updates instead of manual admin edits.

Can this work with Pronto Xi or Business Central product data?

Yes. Pocketknife is built for Shopify Plus teams using ERP product data from systems like Pronto Xi, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Apparel21, ASW, Exact and Oracle E-Business Suite.

Can this work with Akeneo, Salsify or Plytix?

Yes, if the PIM can provide product content by API, feed or another reliable export. Pocketknife can map that content into the Shopify product update flow.

Can PIM attributes become Shopify metafields?

Yes. Product specs, dimensions, compliance fields, files and custom attributes can be mapped into Shopify metafields when the storefront needs structured product data.

Can variant-level product data be enriched too?

Yes. Variant data can be matched by SKU or item code so variant images, sizes, colours, barcodes, dimensions or custom attributes can be sent to Shopify.

Can Shopify keep manual image ordering?

Yes. Product image ordering can be handled carefully so syncs do not unnecessarily undo the way your team wants images arranged in Shopify.

Can Pocketknife stop duplicate SKUs causing bad product updates?

Yes. Product sync can use SKU matching and block unsafe syncs when product data cannot be matched cleanly, so bad product records do not get pushed blindly into Shopify.

Let the ERP own the item list and the PIM own the product content.

We will map your ERP product feed, PIM enrichment fields, Shopify product payload, metafields, images and files so product updates stop becoming duplicate admin work.
